Tub vs. Can

Although my answer has lost in the "Tub vs. Can" poll, I simply think most everyone is wrong:) To prove my point, I turn to the Oracle of All Things: Google.

Searching for "tub of frosting" on Google returns about ~1,700 web pages.

In contrast, searching for "can of frosting" on Google returns more than 6,800 web pages.

Google is always right:)

From google: can an airtight sealed metal container for food or drink or paint etc

Tub: a large open vessel for holding or storing liquids

Since the tub of frosting can be open and is not metal google will call it a tub of frosting.

On Flickr there are 25 results for can of frosting and 17 for tub. So it seems that people do use can more than tub. But it's still a tub of frosting
