Hawkish Democrat Calls for Iraq Pullout

John Murtha is a complete boob. There... I said it. I feel a lot better.

Look, you can argue that Iraq was a mistake, that the occupation made one mistake after another, that we were lied to, whatever. But arguing that the Iraqi people would be better off if the only force for order they have just walked away is about as close to legally insane as you can get. From the article:

"Our military is suffering, the future of our country is at risk. We cannot continue on the present course. It is evident that continued military action in Iraq is not in the best interests of the United States of America, the Iraqi
people or the Persian Gulf region."

Lets just look at that statemnet.

Our military is suffering... I'm afraid I don't see how. Are some people unhappy they had to be dragged to the middle of the desert? You bet. But that's the deal. You sign up for the military, there is a chance you will go to war. That's why we pay for all that training and free college and all that other jazz.

...The future of our country is at risk. ??? Uh, how exactly?

We cannot continue on the present course. We can and we must in my mind.

It is evident that continued military action in Iraq is not in the best interests of the United States of America... See Reagan's decision to abandon Afghanistan in the 80's for an example of why that statement is ignorant.

...the Iraqi people or the Persian Gulf region Iraq would become Afghanistan in the late 80s and 90s. Warlords, chaos, and perfect place for terrorists to hang out and recruit. If you think Iraq is a rallying call now, just wait and see what would happen if we walked away and let it all head to shit.

Walk away now, walk away in ten years, the same shit's going to go down.

The only difference is how many American lives get snuffed in the process.

You can't fight a war against a religion and a culture. This is what people fail to understand about conflicts in the Middle East. You can't just pop a Mickey Ds in the middle of the fucking desert and expect Jihadist Joe to suddenly forget his way of life.

"I disagree R. If we pull out now there will be lots of pissed off people in Iraq. And they're all gonna blame the US."

Right, because this was NEVER the case before we invaded.

What "we," by the way, are you talking about? I guess I missed the part where you enlisted and got shipped out to the desert.

I'm not blindly blasting at anyone. I simply abhor those who include themselves in things they are not a part of, particularly and especially when using it to justify highly dangerous actions that have yielded the deaths of 2000 plus Americans.

This isn't a fucking football game. "Oh yeah, we spanked them good last weekend!" And even if it were, the only people who had anything to do with anything are the individuals actually out on the field, or out in the desert with an M16 in their hands.

Pro-war protesters who shout out vapid bullshit about how "we're" going to bring freedom to the Iraqis. Just how the fuck are they bringing anything to anybody by standing on a fucking street corner holding a cardboard sign?

Please reference my very first comment on this thread if you're still confused as to what I have to contribute to this. I've made my point and you've made yours.

Kieno, you should knock on the door of the home of a soldier's wife, look her square in the eye, and tell her that you think her husband should stay in Iraq for five more years.

I mean, it's one thing to post this on a blog. But do you actually have the balls to face what your comments actually mean?

Well said Kien. I agree with your comments.

"You can also go to Iraq and tell a Shi'ite boy who's father was murdered by Sunni insurgents that we're leaving because American lives are more important than his.

Where is the honor in that?"

How about the kid from the ghetto who can't compete with rich whitey because his school doesn't have money for computers? "Sorry, Jermaine, but we're trying to give Khalid over there a laptop so he can blog about his life in Iraq. Try the Army. I hear they're hiring."

Hell yes American lives are worth more than Iraqi lives. I'm sorry if it offends you, but that's how I feel. If I had a hundred dollars to go towards educating an American kid from the ghetto or to giving an Iraqi kid some food, I'd give it to the American kid.

Hey, honor, faith, all that intangible shit you can have. Personally I'd rather have an American wife get her husband back alive instead of a folded American flag...I don't care how much honor it's imbued with.

It's not our job to save the world.

"...but you came out and made a bunch of assumptions about what Kien had to say and basically you look like a pissed off jerk."

Aye. But when Americans are dying, I don't have time to be touchy-feely with people.

There are far more important things to care about.
