When you give girl roses she gets all happy inside. You're treating her special telling her that you will go through the trouble just to show you that you care. The roses are nice but it's really the thought that counts.
What is equivalent to that for guys? If you give a guy a rose or a card he'll say "Thanks, what do I do with it?". Strange I know, but I guess it never occurs to me that my significant other would think about me when I'm not there. I would think that she was too busy with other things and probably thought about me in passing. I'm okay with that! :-)
The roses and candy I find are to be viewed by others sometimes. So perhaps it's a "Make you feel special, make others jealous" kind of thing.
Maybe this would work. When other guys flirt with you tell them you have a husband/boyfriend with a huge penis and you don't want them for anything. Then tell me about it. That would be about the same! :-)
